Here’s what your support makes possible.

HIV was discovered in 1981. When AIDS Vancouver Island (AVI) was founded in 1986, there were 279 cases of HIV in British Columbia, and only 126 of those people were still alive. Since then, the cumulative total of cases in the province has exceeded 10,000.

Twenty-five years ago, AVI was operated by volunteers who provided all of the support and education services. Initial funding came from a benefit and charitable donations, and a small office space was obtained at no charge.

Twenty-five years later, the need for HIV/AIDS-related programs and services has continued to grow. AVI supports over 500 people living with HIV, and we know there are many that our services don’t reach. In 2009, we provided prevention workshops to nearly 14,000 people across the Island, from Port Hardy to Victoria, from Nanaimo to Tofino. Today, AVI receives support from individuals and organizations in the communities we serve, including the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

Your participation in Artists for AIDS helps AIDS Vancouver Island work to turn the tides of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
